Nature-based occupational therapy to enhance the five pathways to nature connection.

Nature Connection

Growing closer to nature Nature enhances

our wellbeing. Nature is a place to be. Nature connection helps us to live our best lives. Nurturing our connection to nature can help us develop greater confidence, happiness and resilience. Accessing nature activities regularly, gives your child the opportunity to practise developmental and life skills that are repeatable between therapy sessions.

Studies by Nature Connectedness Research Group at the University of Derby during the past few years identified many benefits of nature connection including; improved mental wellbeing; greater vitality and happiness; more satisfaction in life; greater meaning and purpose in life and more pro-nature conservation behaviours. Other recent studies show that spending time in nature can benefit a child and young person for opportunity for increasing physical and emotional co- and self-regulation; increasing thinking, focus, memory and attention ability and reducing levels of stress and anxiety.

In nature therapy we explore activities to increase nature connection and your child's life skills by attending to the 5 pathways to nature connection; contact, emotion, beauty, meaning and compassion. We provide opportunities that can help you and your child to; activate the sense pathway; seek opportunities to experience and celebrate beauty; become more aware of positive emotions; explore personal and cultural stories, celebrate the mystery and cycles of life and take actions that hep protect ourselves and support the wellbeing of the natural world. These activities also provide opportunity

for your child to experience their natural world, their individual growth and skill development.

Nature is a a haven and an adventure; colourful, surprising, peaceful and incredible experiences of wonder and beauty. In nature we feel alive and bring this sense of aliveness to other activities

and to our relationships. There is so much to observe, feel, do. A childlike exploration can imbue our everyday and in nature we can feel less alone.

As a child, a family member and friend, sharing nature with others is a natural way to appreciate our connectedness to our world, our community and to each other. I hope to share with you moments of nature connectedness in everyday activities, that you can carry through in your daily lives.
